Books cartoon finds a home at last
Sometimes it takes a cartoon a while to find its rightful place in the world. This gag appears in The Oldie Review of Books, a supplement free with the current issue of The Oldie magazine.
They wrote to contributing cartoonists asking for gags on a books theme so I submitted some that I had on file. This one had been submitted to many magazines here and abroad – including The Oldie! – but had never sold. But it found a fitting home in a magazine about books.
This is why I like to refer to my files of unpublished cartoons not as rejections, but as gags that haven't sold yet...

Farewell to the father of the Grim Reaper cartoon
The Swedish film director Ingmar Bergman passed away this week. He's recognised as a genius of cinema but I thought we should also recognise him as the father of that staple of cartoonists: the Grim Reaper gag.
Yes, I know he didn't invent the image of the Grim Reaper, it's been around for centuries, but by showing Ol' Hoodie playing chess in The Seventh Seal, above, he put him in the mundane world of us mortals. And countless cartoonists picked up this idea and ran with it. Well, that's my theory, and I like it.
I've done plenty of Grim Reaper cartoons myself. Here are two, from The Oldie and The Spectator respectively. The original of the latter sold to a newspaper obituaries editor who collects Grim Reaper cartoons.

Oldie magazine cartoon: Released from limbo
Sometimes a magazine will accept a cartoon but then hang on to it for a long time before using it. This one is in the current issue of The Oldie, but they've had it for almost a year.
It was actually drawn in January 2006, with a Rotring technical pen. It's almost a year since I switched to brush pens, so although it's good to finally see this in print, I much prefer the brush-pen line.

The gag is, of course, a variation on the "wise guru" theme, one of the cartoon cliches that have been around for years, along with desert island gags and "take me to your leader" aliens. It's always a good idea to come up with new, fresh themes for cartoons, but it doesn't do any harm to knock out the odd variation on a well-worn theme!

Cartoon in Oldie book
An old cartoon of mine from The Oldie has been republished in the magazine's Christmas stocking filler book Bling, Blogs and Bluetooth, which was released recently.
It's one that I dashed out in a bit of a hurry to make up a batch. So it sold, of course. I was a bit embarrassed by its slapdash look when I first saw it in print. But it's an OK gag, so I suppose I just about got away with it.
