I never Metamorphosis I didn't like

"On the plus side: I no longer have to pretend I know what Kafkaesque means."

Here's a "clever" cartoon, though cleverly it's about not being clever. Clever, eh? It's really a cartoon about bluffing it, and I think the bug is probably me. I must admit, I've never read any Franz Kafka but I have read Kafka for Beginners, as it's illustrated by cartoonist Robert Crumb. A good starting point.

  1. Love the gag, Royston!

I once went to a performance by the Cambridge Footlights. One of the acts was 'The Franz Kafka Metamorphosis Blues', where the first line of the song went:

    "I woke up this morning
And found I had changed into a giant insect"

Before anyone had a chance to react, another member of the company charged onto the stage berating the audience about not understanding Kafka, reading around their subjects ect yak and blah.

I have read Kafka. I was much more intellectual when I was 20 than I am now.

  2. I saw this in New Humanist, Royston - great gag! I liked the other one too.

I've read bits and pieces of Kafka - Metamorphosis, Inside The Penal Colony - when I was at school and university. Worth a look, but I've never moved on to the longer novels (some of which I think were never finished and end abruptly). That Crumb book is great though - when I think of Kafka it's his drawings I'm thinking of.

Good to see you in Shrewsbury!

  3. I like it Royston. Nice bug.

  4. Thanks for the kind comments, all!
