Not Yet Sold: Bouncy castle cartoon

"This was fine for your nephew's fifth, Sire, but I fear it is set for a sterner test."

I don't post many rejected cartoons on the blog, preferring instead to showcase the ones that have been hits. But I thought I might dig out a few for an occasional feature that I've just decided to call, with the eternal optimism of the gag cartoonist, Not Yet Sold.

Naturally, I'll be picking out ones that I was pleased with but which have been around the block with no success. This was one. I like to draw history cartoons. Feedback and constructive criticism on my Not Yet Sold cartoons would be welcome in the Comments below.

  1. A sterner test than overexcited, sugar-fueled five year olds?! I think not!
Nice cartoon though. Love the slightly awkward position of the king.

  2. Yes, very good. Can't imagine why it didn't sell. Stick a tortoise in there somewhere - the Eye will snap it up.

  3. Tim, I must admit I've been toying with the idea of sending a tortoise gag to the Eye, just for a laugh. I think Tony Husband has the monopoly on that subject though.

Morten, I think you might have hit the nail on the head! It should be something like "Sire this was fine against the hordes of barbarians, but I fear it is set for a sterner test." And we see a crowd of overexcited five-year-olds bombing towards it, stuffing themselves with cake and fizzy drinks.

Back to the drawing board ... ;-)

  4. Yes, would definitely work better the other way round Royston.
A bunch of five year olds could be quite terrifying!
I will admit that I didn't get it at first.

  6. Heh, very good, Andy. That could be a new caption but I might be accused of disappearing up my own aaarrgh!

Ian, no need to "admit" it, I'm happy to get critical comments on rejected gags (or indeed any!) as long as they're constructive and not the usual type you get on the net i.e. OMG!!! THis is SO LAYME!!!! U SUK I HOP U DIE!! :-(

  7. Tried a suicide tortoise with the Eye - "Do you think he was trying to tell us something?" Didn't seem to go down too well!

  9. I think it's a brilliant cartoon and worth at the very least £20.
