Art-toonists in Herne Bay this weekend

I'll be at the above event in Herne Bay, Kent, this weekend (poster © Hunt Emerson). It's part of the Duchamp in Herne Bay festival, which marks 100 years since the artist Marcel Duchamp visited the town.

In the pranksterish spirit of the godfather of conceptual art (he's the urinal guy) many of the cartooning events have a certain playful air to them. That's another way of saying I'm really not sure what we'll be doing, but I'm sure it'll be fun!

Cartoons on the theme of art will be on display, many in various Shepherd Neame pub toilets (we're back to the urinal again) throughout the town. Here's one that appears in the slightly more salubrious setting of the official event programme.
There is a heck of lot of Duchamp in Herne Bay stuff going on over the next few weeks, not just the cartoon-based events, and it looks well worth a visit. You can read the programme online or visit the official website.

Weather cartoon: The prediction game

"We'll be seeing appalling shorts throughout the country and scattered outbreaks of ill-advised vests ..."

Deadlines on monthly magazines are so far in advance of publication that it can be tricky to reflect events accurately. Sometimes you get it right though. When this cartoon was drawn the idea of a very sunny summer seemed somewhat unlikely. But we're all still wearing those dodgy shorts as it appears in the current issue of Saga.

More cartoon adventures in space

Having drawn the cartoons for the Adventures with the Wife in Space blog, in which the Doctor Who superfan Neil Perryman subjected his long-suffering wife Sue to every episode of the original series, I have now drawn one for its sequel.

Adventures with the Wife and Blake, will see the experiment repeated with every episode of the cult 1970s sci-fi show Blake's 7. It won't take anywhere near as long but it could still be grounds for divorce. The project is being launched using Kickstarter and fans can pledge to support it here.

Meanwhile, I've drawn the front and back covers for the Adventures with the Wife in Space book which is published by Faber & Faber in the autumn, to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. More on that nearer the time.

Weather cartoon: You give me fever

"You're going to beat the hayfever but it may affect your all-over tan."

Unlikely though it sounds, we're having a heatwave in the UK. Hope you're enjoying it.

Reader's Digest cartoon: A family effort

"I've lost count of how many times I've had to turn that kid away."

My son came up with the idea for this cartoon, hence the "Thanks, Fergus" in the corner. His original set-up and wording was slightly different – an angry barman saying "I've told you before, you're not getting served in my pub and you never will!" – but I saw straight away that it was a good joke.

So rather than asking why a young boy (he's just turned 11) is coming up with pub-based jokes I made a note of it. It can be seen in the July Reader's Digest and an appropriate pocket money adjustment will be made.
